Item BULLETIN of the Volume 82 February 2018 INSTITUTE of COMBINATORICS and its APPLICATIONS(Boca Raton, FL, U.S.A., 2018-02) Wilbroad, Bezire; Dinesh, G. SarvateWe define a 3-GDD(n, 2, k, λ1, λ2) by extending the definitions of a group divisible design and a t-design and give some necessary conditions for its existence. We prove that these necessary conditions are sufficient for the existence of a 3-GDD(n, 2, 4, λ1, λ2) except possibly when n ≡ 1, 3 (mod 6), n 6= 3, 7, 13 and λ1 > λ2. It is known that a partition of all 3-subsets of a 7-set into 5 Steiner triple systems (a large set for 7) does not exist, but we show that the collection of all 3-sets of a 7-set along with a Steiner triple system on the 7-set can be partitioned into 6 Steiner triple systems. Such a partition is then used to prove the existence of all possible 3-GDDs for n = 7.Item The Relationship between Workload and Teachers Effectiveness in Secondary Schools(Bishop Stuart University, 2019) Wilber, Nuwaha; Gershom, Atukunda; Florah, KyayemagyeThe study assessed the relationship between teachers’ workload and their effectiveness in secondary schools. A descriptive survey design was adopted for this study to determine the frequency of occurrences of the phenomenon and discover whether or not if there is a relationship that exists between the variables. The target population of this study comprised Head teachers, Deputy Head teachers, Directors of Studies and Teachers in the selected Secondary Schools in Sheema Municipality, Sheema Municipality. The study employed questionnaire, and interviewing. The study used Pearson correlation to determine the level of statistical relationship between workload and teachers’ effectiveness. Results indicate that there is a weak but significant positive correlation between teachers’ workload and their effectiveness in secondary schools (r=0.012, p<0.045). It was found that teachers are always prepared when holding classes. It was concluded that teachers in secondary schools of Sheema Municipality, Sheema Municipality are given other responsibilities apart from teaching. These include; duty supervision, monitoring, some co-curricular activities like drama, football guidance and counseling. It was also concluded that teachers in secondary schools of Sheema Municipality, Sheema Municipality are effective in terms of students’ improvement in discipline, good performance registered in terms of academics. It was also concluded that more workload for teachers affects their effectiveness negatively that is; failure to prepare schemes of work, lesson plans, assess learners, maintain discipline and participate in co-curricular activities. The study recommends that the government should set more innovative guidelines for teacher workload in schools to enable school administrators not to overload the teachers that may result into ineffectiveness.Item The influence of teaching styles on students’ academic performance in secondary schools: A case of Uganda(Bishop Stuart University, 2020) Lilian, Ruteraho; Enock, BarigyeThis study examined the influence of teaching styles on the academic performance of students in secondary schools in Mbarara Municipality. The study adopted a cross sectional survey design which incorporated qualitative and quantitative approaches. The study used a sample of 216 respondents where 70 teachers, 138 students, 3 inspectors and 5 head teachers. Questionnaire survey method was used to gather data from both teachers and students whereas head teachers and inspectors of schools were subjected to in-depth interviews. Quantitative data was analyzed with help of descriptive statistics using SPSS while thematic analysis was used to analyze qualitative data. From the study findings, it was found out that learner centered and teacher centred teaching styles were commonly used in secondary schools of Mbarara Municipality but most importantly learner centred teaching styles were predominantly used. The study found out teaching styles influences the level of mastery of concepts and skills in aspects like communication, research, reporting and self-expression among others. The study recommends that teachers should employ a variety of teaching styles but most preferably learner centred styles need to be emphasized in order to promote student learning. Also, refresher courses among secondary school teachers to equip them with the most current effective teaching styles under tooling and re-tooling programmes. Teachers ought to be mindful when selecting the teaching styles and instructional materials that motivate learners in the teaching learning processItem STUDENT EVALUATION AS AN IMPETUS FOR QUALITY TEACHING AND LEARNING IN HIGHER EDUCATION INSTITUTIONS(African Multidisciplinary Journal of Research (AMJR), 2020-01) RONALD BAHATI; MONICA KARUNGIIn the context of sustained growth and diversification of Higher Education Systems, civil society is increasingly concerned about the quality of programmers offered to students. As a result, there is an increase in public assessments and international comparisons of Higher Education Institutions, not only within the higher education sector but in the general media (OECD, 2008). However, evaluation methods tend to overemphasize research and the use of research performance as a yardstick of an institution’s value. Although this is very paramount in academia, it has got insignificant contribution to the quality of graduates who precede from such breeding grounds. There is need to appreciate the fact that the quality of graduates is largely determined by the way they are taught thus calling for a rationalized intended approach to the evaluation of the quality of teaching and learning in higher education institutions (Kaneko, 2008). The current study investigated the quality of teaching in Bishop Stuart University in Uganda with the aim of encouraging practices that could enhance the quality of teaching and thereby checking the quality of graduates. The study adopted a cross sectional comparative study design using both quantitative and qualitative research approaches. This study was conducted at Bishop Stuart University (BSU), Mbarara in the Faculty of Education where a comparison of the teaching and learning process of students in two programme sessions of study (recess or distance learning and regular sessions) was carried out. Randomized samples of 362 out of a population of 1501 and 78 out of a population of 201 students were obtained from both the regular and recess sessions respectively for the quantitative data. An evaluation was done of the teaching and learning process in the two programme sessions in the classes taught by the same lecturers using the same instrument which had 9 items related to lecturers’ punctuality, attendance, mastery of subject content, teaching methods, enthusiasm and commitment, lecturers’ being dependable and approachable, respect and meaningful feedback. The findings thereof were mutually exclusive; it was found that the lecturers from students of the regular programme had very good scores whereas from students of recess or distance learning programme, the same lecturers had low scores. This finding compelled the researchers to find out why this was so. They thus conducted a Focus Group Discussion (FGD) and three Key Informants’ Interviews (KIIs) which revealed that the programme session conditions and terms of work affected the teaching and learning processes. It was concluded that under a given outlay of conditions, the same lecturers performed differently. It was thus recommended that using both qualitative and quantitative data approaches, there should be continuous student evaluations in ensuring effective teaching and learning, particularly for students in higher institutions of learning.Item The Relationship between Remuneration and Teacher Performance in Government-Aided Secondary Schools in Kasese District(International Journal of Science and Research (IJSR), 2020-12) Chrispo, Maali; Herbert, Elvis Ainamani; Adrian, Rwekaza MwesigyeAbstract: The purpose of the study was to assess the relationship between remuneration and teachers' performance in government aided secondary schools in Kasese District. The study adopted a cross-sectional research design with a quantitative approach to data collection and analysis. A sample size of 25 government-aided secondary schools was purposively adopted in this study in which 234 teachers were randomly selected to participate in this study. This study found out that there is a significant positive relationship between remuneration and performance of teachers in government-aided secondary schools in the Kasese district. Findings show that a significant number of teachers usually prepare schemes of work, utilize teaching aids, apply different methods of teaching, and assess learners in the teaching and learning process. It was concluded that remuneration predicts teachers' performance in the government aided secondary in Kasese District. The study recommends that education policymakers, implementers, and managers pay much attention to the remuneration packages for teachers in government-aided schools. This is hoped to improve teachers' performance in their preparation to teach, deliver, and assess the learners.Item Job satisfaction and Work Engagement of Teachers in Secondary Schools in Isingiro District(Bishop Stuart University, 2021) Osiime Asenath, Bamureeba; Sudi, BalimuttajjoThe study was about the relationship between job satisfaction and work engagement of teachers in secondary schools in Isingiro District. The study aimed at examining the degree of job satisfaction of teachers in secondary schools in Isingiro District, determining the levels of teachers‟ engagement in secondary schools in Isingiro District. Literature was thematically generated basing on the main study objectives and in relation to the conceptual frame work. The study adopted cross sectional research design which was descriptive in nature. Both quantitative and qualitative were used to analyse data. From the study findings, teachers were satisfied with their fellow workers. Interpersonal interactions with co-workers created greater meaning in work environment. Individuals derived meaning from the social identities and interactions fostered a sense of belonging. The study concluded that teachers had freedom to choose their own methods of working and good relationship with their immediate supervisors which helped to improve job satisfaction among teachers. The study concluded that teachers in secondary schools in Isingiro District were emotionally engaged with their work which was based on the idea of emotional labour at work, which is the process of regulating one‟s feelings at work. The study concluded that there is a positive relationship between job satisfaction and work engagement of teachers in secondary schools in Isingiro District with Correlation Pearson Coefficient r =.678**p = 0.05. It was recommended that school administrators should organise workshops about job satisfaction to increase their engagement as well as performance, there is need for effective supervision on quality of lesson notes, schemes of work, record of marks, exams and lesson presentations and the Government and the Ministry of Education should provide mandatory policy to all the school head teachers to facilitate job satisfaction of teachers in secondary schoolsItem The Relationship between Welfare and Discipline of Secondary School Students in Sheema District, Uganda(Bishop Stuart University, 2021) Francis, Kahonda Muhumuza; Enock, BarigyeDiscipline of students has been reported to be pivorted on the state of the welfare of students itself across the world(Olszewski-Kubilius & Corwith, 2018). Besides, it is the responsibility of all school stakeholders to ensure an ordered and safe environment where students feel secure and become successful and confident learners and where all members of the school community are treated fairly and with respect (Bates & Bailey, 2018). In Bostwana, the secondary school had their image marred by acts of low students’ discipline. Some students died and other became blind after they broke into the school science laboratory and consumed toxic amount of methanol and ethanol (Kilonzo, 2013). In East Africa, particularly Kenya has faced increased cases of indiscipline (Ngwokabuenui, 2015). Some of the acts of indiscipline experienced in Kenya are truancy, bullying, destruction of school property, physical violence by students on fellow students and on teachers. Until now, poor welfare has continued to be the most contributing factor to low student’s discipline in secondary schools (Justice, 2016). Thus, evidence adduced reveals that the upcoming low discipline of students is a universal problem. In Uganda there are two prominent-categories of school foundations exist; faith based and non faith-based and welfare is at the heart of understanding of the discipline of students in a given institution. Yearly, cases of student indiscipline are reported countrywide in schools of both foundations. From 2010-2016, a wave of student strikes rocked the whole country. Besides, the schools which experienced serious student indiscipline were reported to have issues related to the differences in the status of students’ welfare. The situation above makes it apparent that low discipline is normally sparked off by lack of requisite strategies of managing students. Notably, even the students in the-faith based schools in which high levels of discipline of students were exhibited in the olden days, strikes were reported. Besides, Sheema district experienced violent strikes in secondary schools in 2014 which included burning of dormitories, breaking of windowpanes and wooden doors, hunger strikes among others (Tumuhairwe, 2015). There has been a notable disparity in the discipline of secondary school students in Sheema district (Mugasha, 2013). Widespread strikes in Sheema district led to the closure of secondary schools of which only two schools had not striked indicating that almost all the secondary 3 schools in Sheema district striked. Besides, the strikes left a lot of damages in property; for example, students in schools like Sacred Heart Mushanga caused extensive damages to school property after three arson incidents. A study conducted by Niwamanya (2016) revealed that discipline of students in Sheema district during the period between 2013 and 2014 was very much wanting. Although Parents Teachers Associations meetings were conducted in order to mitigate future strikes, no known study has been conducted to determine the status of welfare and its relationship with discipline of students. Therefore, it is against this background that the researcher investigated how welfare affects discipline among the secondary schools in Sheema district.Item The Effectiveness of Home Learning Among Secondary School Students in Nyakayojo Mbarara City South(East African Journal of Education Studies, 2022) Beatrace, Nahurira; Enock, Barigye; Basil, TibanyenderaThe study assesses the effectiveness of home learning among secondary school students in Nyakayojo Mbarara City South. The researcher used a cross-sectional research design. Both quantitative and qualitative approaches were used. The population of the study comprised the Mbarara City Inspector of Schools, Mbarara City Education Officer, Students, Headteachers, Director of Studies, Chairperson LC1, and parents. A sample size of 311 respondents participated in the study. The study findings found that the effectiveness of home learning in Nyakayojo Mbarara City South was bad. It was concluded that there was the ineffectiveness of home learning in Nyakayojo Mbarara City South. It was recommended that the government should always distribute self-study materials on time. This will enable students to keep motivated while learning from home during holidays. The government should ensure that the study materials distributed are effectively utilised by students. This can be implemented through sensitisation on mass media like radios, TVs, and Newspapers, among othersItem Impact of Cultural Attachment on Intention to Drop Out of School in Public Primary Schools(East African Journal of Education Studies, 2022) Robert, Agume; Enoch, Barigye; Irene, AheisibweIntention to drop out of school and consequential child dropout due to cultural attachment, particularly among cattle keepers is a global challenge in various contextual settings. The study investigated the contributions of cultural attachment on intention to drop out of school in the primary schools in the Kazo district. Analytical cross-sectional design using a quantitative approach was conducted in January 2022 among 338 children in primary six and primary seven in the six public primary schools in Kazo district. Pearson product-moment correlations and linear regression were conducted using Stata 15. The study findings were that cultural attachment had a moderate positive impact on intention to drop out of school in the primary schools in Kazo district (r = .0.10, p =.242) and explained only 1% of the variance of intention to drop out of school in the primary schools in Kazo district (r2 = .01). Therefore, various cultural attachment influence intention to drop out of school. Strategies for cultural attachment are paramount.Item Teachers’ Qualifications and Their Performance in Primary Schools in Buyanja Sub-County Rukungiri District, Uganda(East African Journal of Education Studies, 2022) Evas, Turyasiima; Balimuttajjo, Suudi; Tutegyerize, JeanThis study investigated the relationship between teachers’ qualifications and their performance in Buyanja sub-county primary schools, Rukungiri district, Uganda. The study adopted a cross-sectional research design on a sample of 190 respondents. Data was collected using a self-administered questionnaire, an interview guide, and an observation checklist. Quantitative data were analysed using descriptive statistics that were frequencies, percentages and means, and inferential statistics, then correlation and regression. The study found that there was a moderate positive relationship between teachers’ qualifications and teaching staff performance in primary schools in Buyanja Sub-County Rukungiri. It was recommended that the school managers and administrators should always deploy the teachers depending on the level of performance rather than the level of qualification.Item THE INVARIANT SUBSPACE PROBLEM FOR CONTRACTIVE OPERATORS IN KREIN SPACES(2022) WILBROAD, BEZIREThe invariant subspace problem, which is one of the most funda mental questions in operator theory and which has been a subject of study for several decades remains open even on a Hilbert space. However, for certain classes of operators, for example, compact operators, solutions do exist. In this paper, we address this question for contractive operators T defined on a Krein space K. We investigate the existence of semi-definite invariant subspaces and establish that every contractive operator T defined on a Krein space K has maximal semi-definite invariant subspacesItem Implications of Land Use and Cover Changes on Upper River Rwizi Macro-Watershed Health in South Western Uganda(2022) Nseka, Denis; Opedes, Hosea; Mugagga, Frank; Ayesiga, Patience; Semakula, Henry; Wasswa, Hannington; Ologe, DanielThe upper Rwizi river system in South Western Uganda has been severely degraded due to encroachment and unsustainable resource utilization. Little is, however, known about the link between the upper Rwizi macro-watershed health and land use/cover patterns from the spatiotemporal perspective. This study evalu ated the relationship between spatiotemporal land use/ cover change and upper river Rwizi macro watershed health. Remotely sensed data was used to analyze the spatiotemporal land use and cover distribution for upper Rwizi macro watershed. The analysis was done using Landsat and Sentinel imagery datasets spanning 1990 to 2020 and 2016 to 2021 respectively. Field verification was undertaken to confirm the land use, cover types, and evaluate the implications of prevailing anthropogenic activities on the watershed health. The land use and cover characteristics in the upper Rwizi macro-watershed exhibits both highly spatial and temporal variations. By 1990, grassland as the dominant land use and cover type spanned 45% of the total study area followed by farmland at 30%. Forests, open water and settlements covered 12%, 10% and 3% respectively. Whereas grassland and forest cover has diminished drastically by 64% and 71% respectively, settlements and farmland have increased tremendously by 79% and 50% respectively between 1990 and 2020. The hillslope hydrological characteristics in the watershed are severely hampered due to increased human activities. It is, therefore, recommended that afforestation in the degraded areas be undertaken to restore the watershed health which could improve on hillslope hydrology.Item Implications of Soil Properties on Landslide Occurrence in Kigezi Highlands of South Western Uganda(IntechOpen, 2022) Nseka, Denis; Kakembio, Vincent; Mugagga, Frank; Semakula, Henry; Opedes, Hosea; Wasswa, Hannington; Ayesiga, PatienceGenerally, soil characteristics have a significant influence on landslide occurrence. This issue has, however, not yet been adequately analysed in Kigezi highlands of South Western Uganda. In this study, soil properties such as disper sion, grain size distribution, Atterberg limits, shear strength and clay mineralogy were analysed to establish their contribution to the spatial distribution of landslides in Kigezi highlands. The results demonstrate that deep soil profiles ranging between 2.5 and 7 meters were dominated by clay-pans at a depth between 0.75 and 3 meters. Although the uppermost surface horizons of the soil profile are loamy sand, the clay content is more than 35% especially in the sub soil. This suggests that the soil materials are Vertic in nature. In addition, the upper soil layers predominantly contain quartz, while subsurface horizons have considerable amounts of illite as the dominant clay minerals, ranging from 43–47%. The average liquid limit and plas ticity index was 58.43% and 33.3% respectively. Besides, high average computed weighted plasticity index (28.4%) and expansiveness (38.6%) were obtained. These soil characteristics have great implication on the timing and nature of landslide processes in the study area. A change in soil material due to varying moisture content is thought to be a major trigger of landslides in Kigezi highlands of South Western Uganda. This understanding of soil characteristics is a key step in mitigating landslide hazards in the areaItem Science Teachers’ Remuneration and Their Job Performance among Government Aided Secondary Schools in Mbarara, Uganda(East African Journal of Management and Business Studies, 2022-03) Florah, Kyayemagye; Gershom, Atukunda; Merab, NantaleThis study sought to investigate on Science Teachers’ remuneration and their Job Performance among Government Aided Secondary Schools in Mbarara District, Uganda. The study employed a descriptive survey research design. The target population was 126 science teachers and head teachers in seven government-aided secondary schools in Mbarara District. The study randomly sampled 96 science teachers and seven Head Masters using Yamens’ formula. A questionnaire and an interview schedule were used as source of data from the field. The study established that parent teachers association (PTA) and Secondary Science and Mathematics training allowances were the most common allowances in schools under investigation. Extra teaching allowances, salary increment, duty allowance and overtime allowances were moderately perceived to exist. Remuneration motivated teachers in carrying out such school activities as to complete syllabus, to promote good performance and quality of teaching and to attend classes regularly. Therefore, the government through the ministry of education should ensure that science teachers are provided with attractive remunerations in order to sustain their motivation toward teachingItem The Relationship between Appraisal Practices and Teachers’ Instructional Delivery Methods in Isingiro North Constituency Primary Schools of Isingiro District, Uganda(Bishop Stuart University, P.O. Box 09, Mbarara, Uganda., 2022-05-09) Prudence, Kyasimire; Dr. Irene, Aheisibwe, PhD; Enoch, BarigyeThe study established the relationship between appraisal practices and teachers’ instructional delivery methods in Isingiro North Constituency Primary Schools of Isingiro District, Uganda. A descriptive survey design was adopted. The target population of this study comprised of head teachers, teachers in the Primary schools and inspector of schools in Isingiro north constituency. Questionnaires were used to collect data from respondents. The results indicated that there was a positive statistically significant relationship between appraisal practices and teachers’ instructional delivery method (The p =0.000<0.01). It was concluded that there was a positive significant relationship between appraisal practices and teachers’ instructional delivery. It was recommended that the ministry of education should enhance goal setting practices and link attainment of goals with rewards to continue improving the teachers’ instruction delivery in primary schools. Head teachers should provide regular and timely feedback to teachers. Head teachers should ensure that performance feedback is free from errors based on personal bias like stereotyping to have positive effect on instruction delivery.Item Social Demographic Characteristics and Teachers’ Performance in Government Aided Secondary Schools:(International Journal of Scientific and Research Publications, 2022-07) Maali, Chrispo; Herbert, Elvis Ainamani; Adrian, Mwesigye RwekazaIn this study, we aimed at examining the association between social demographic characteristics of teachers and their performance in government-aided secondary school Kasese district southwestern Uganda. Using purposive and stratified for both schools and teachers in this quantitative study, we recruited 234 teachers from 25 government aided secondary in Kasese district southwestern Uganda Data was analysed using SPSS version 24, and presented using both descriptive and inferential statistics. We conclude that some teachers’ social demographic characteristics have a significant influence on teachers’ performance in government-aided secondary schools with in Kasese district south western Uganda. We recommend that policy makers design the most appropriate interventions entailing human resource practices aimed at streamlining the needs of teachers from different demographic cohorts.Item CULTURAL ATTACHMENT AND INTENTION TO DROP OUT OF SCHOOL IN PRIMARY SCHOOLS IN KAZO DISTRICT(Bishop stuart university, 2022-07) ROBERT, AGUMEThe study investigated the relationship between cultural attachment and intention to dropout of school among children in primary schools in Kazo district. It was guided by three research objectives, which included; 1) To establish the level of cultural attachment among children in Primary schools in Kazo District; 2) To establish the level of intention to dropout of child is in Primary schools in Kazo District; and 3)To establish the relationship between cultural attachment and intention to dropout of school among children in Primary schools in Kazo District. Two questions; 1) What is the level of cultural attachment among children in Primary schools in Kazo District? 2) What is the level of intention to dropout of children in Primary schools in Kazo District and a hypothesis; The researcher employed different techniques to select participants. Children were selected by using simple random sampling. Under this, the researcher first used stratified sampling by dividing teachers and children according to gender. After this, fish bowl method was used to get equal number of respondents from different gender strata (Botev & Ridder, 2017).Selection of head teachers and the DEO were selected using purposive sampling technique because they have key information concerning cultural attachment and the intention to dropout of school in respective schools. There is no relationship between cultural attachment and intention to dropout of school among children in Primary schools in Kazo District guided the study. The researcher used a cross - sectional survey design in the primary schools in Kazo district. The study population was conducted among 209 participants, including 201 children, a District Education Officer and 7 head teachers. The study findings showed that low cultural attachment and intention to dropout of school among children in primary schools in Kazo district and children no statistically significant relationship between them (p = .242). It was concluded that cultural attachment and drop out intention were actually low with limited relationship between them. Strategies to keep cultural attachment and intentions to dropout low such as free education are paramountItem Distribution of Self-Study Materials and Home Learning Among Secondary School Students in Nyakayojo Mbarara City South(Bishop Stuart University, 2022-09) Beatrace, NahuriraThe study assesses the contribution of self-study materials on home learning among secondary school students in Nyakayojo Mbarara City South. Objectives of the study included; to examine the extent to which self-study materials were distributed to secondary school students, to assess the effectiveness of home learning, and to establish the relationship between distribution of self-study materials and home learning among secondary school students. The study findings found out that the extent to which self-study materials were distributed to secondary school students in Nyakayojo Mbarara City South was low. The study findings found out that the effectiveness of home learning in Nyakayojo Mbarara City South was bad. The study findings found out that there is a statistically significant relationship between distribution of self-study materials and home learning at p =0.000. It was concluded that there was poor distribution of self-study materials in Nyakayojo Mbarara City South. There was ineffectiveness of home learning in Nyakayojo Mbarara City South was good. Distribution of self-study materials was associated with home learning. It was recommended that the government should always self study materials in time. This will enable students to keep motivate while learning from home during holidays. The parents should guide their children on how to use study materials distributed. This will enable effective utilization of study materials. The government should ensure that the study materials distributed are effectively utilized by students. This can be implemented through sensitization on mass media like radios, TVs, Newspapers, among others.Item Female Genital Mutilation in Mary Karooro Okurut’s The Switch(East African Journal of Arts and Social Sciences, 2023) Akambangira, GraceThis article explores the representations of Female Genital Mutilation (FGM) in Mary Karooro Okurut’s The Switch (2016). In this article, I investigate why the fictional communities depicted in the selected novel engage in FGM practice. The key method used to obtain data is a close reading of the primary text. The secondary texts of both print and electronic forms from relevant works were also consulted. The data was collected with the guidance of the research objective. The study involved the examination of documents guided by a textual checklist as the major research instrument. This study adopted the cultural feminist literary theory. In the study, I discover that different communities engage in FGM as a way to regulate their women’s sexual behaviour and as a norm to transform them from childhood to adulthood. The author has tactfully used techniques like diction, setting and description among others to clearly bring out her messageItem Parental Monitoring and Engagement of Secondary School Students During Covid-19 Lockdown in Kakoba Ward, Mbarara City South, Uganda(East African Journal of Education Studies, 2023) Twesigye, Mackey; Barigye, Enock; Tibanyendera, BasilThe purpose of this study was to investigate parental monitoring and engagement of secondary school students during the COVID-19 Lockdown in Kakoba ward, Mbarara City, Uganda. The study adopted both descriptive and correlational research designs for data collection and analysis. Information was collected from 93 respondents using a questionnaire and interview guide. The factor analysis of items of parental monitoring data generated three factors: parents’ study monitoring, parents’ network monitoring, and parents’ activeness in the student’s studies. The informants’ views provided more insights into the factors, including timetable, checking on the work covered and giving quiz gave more insights. Factor 1- Parents’ study monitoring mirrored networking with other parents. Factor 2 - Parents’ network monitoring - attending classes with children while Factor 3 - Parents’ activeness in studies. The study rejected the null hypothesis that parental monitoring does not significantly influence the engagement of secondary school students. This calls for the strengthening of the relationship between parental monitoring and engagement of secondary school students.
