The Vice President eventually asks you to discuss these topics as they relate to your territory. Approaches to reducing this threat include law enforcement and integrated conservation and development (ICD) projects, but for such ICDs to be targeted effectively, it is important to understand who is illegally using which natural resources and why. The nature of unauthorized behavior makes it difficult to ascertain this information through direct questioning. Bwindi Impenetrable National Park, Uganda, has many ICD projects, including authorizing some local people to use certain non timber forest resources from the park. However, despite over 25 years of ICD, unauthorized resource use continues. We used household surveys, indirect questioning (unmatched count technique), and focus group discussions to generate profiles of authorized and unauthorized resource users and to explore motivations for unauthorized activity. Overall, unauthorized resource use was most common among people from poor households who lived closest to the park boundary and farthest from roads and trading centers. Other motivations for unauthorized resource use included crop raiding by wild animals,inequity of revenue sharing, and lack of employment, factors that created resentment among the poorest communities. In some communities, benefits obtained from ICD were reported to be the greatest deterrents against unauthorized activity, although law enforcement ranked highest overall. Despite the sensitive nature of exploring unauthorized resource use, management-relevant insights into the profiles and motivations of unauthorized resource users can be gained from a combination of survey techniques, as adopted here. To reduce unauthorized activity at Bwindi, we suggest ICD benefit the poorest people living in remote areas and near the park boundary by providing affordable alternative sources of forest products and addressing crop raiding. To prevent resentment from driving further unauthorized activity, ICDs should be managed transparently and equitably.Item Who wants what?(International Institute for Environment and Development, 2017-02) Medard, Twinamatsiko; Dilys, Roe,; Peter, Nizette; Salvatrice, Musabyeyezu; Harold, Goodwin‘Local economic development through pro-poor gorilla tourism in Uganda’ is a three year project funded by the UK government's Darwin Initiative. The aim of the project is to work with local people and established tour operators to develop and test new ‘pro-poor’ tourism products and services around Bwindi Impenetrable National Park. This report discusses the findings of the first two stages of the project; scoping the demand for ‘pro-poor’ tourism initiatives and assessing local capacity for supply. From a combination of tourist and tour operator surveys, as well as a scoping visit to the main tourism zones, the project team identified a range of existing initiatives with the potential to add value to the typical two night gorilla tracking package, increase community revenue from tourism and consequently improve local attitudes towards the park.Item Lessons learnt from 20 years of revenue sharing at Bwindi Impenetrable National Park, Uganda(International Institute for Environment and Development, 2017-11) Medard, TwinamatsikoBwindi Impenetrable National Park is one of the prime protected areas in Uganda, famous for its mountain gorilla families that have been habituated to allow gorillatracking safaris. A revenue sharing (RS) scheme was established in 1995 through which 20 per cent of the park’s revenue was shared with park-adjacent communities. The objective of revenue sharing is to provide local communities with an incentive to support conservation, particularly when they might be adversely impacted for example through having their crops raided by wild animals. Revenue tends to be distributed as grants for projects. Uganda Wildlife Authority has national revenue-sharing guidelines applicable to all its parks and, building on these guidelines, is currently developing a formal revenuesharing regulation. During 2016 a learning evaluation based on 20 years of revenue sharing was carried out among communities surrounding Bwindi, with a view to strengthening the implementation of the revenue sharing and enabling it to become more effective and more equitable. The findings would also help inform the ongoing process of developing a national revenuesharing regulation. In addition, it was intended for the research to have global value, influencing conservation-related revenue-sharing policy and practice at other sites of great ape conservation within Africa and beyond. Although protected areas across the world are now far more likely to consider social and economic conditions in their surrounding communities alongside their biodiversity targets, many issues of equity and effectiveness in revenue sharing are still a long way from being resolved. As this study illustrates, there may be a number of different pathways through which a revenue-sharing scheme might deliver national/global conservation impact and local social impacts, but none of these can be taken for granted. An equity framework based on the three dimensions of recognition, procedure and distribution provides an opportunity for identifying improvements in revenue-sharing policy and practice. To explore revenue-sharing lessons in detail, the Bwindi study established nine learning questions that covered: funding flows; beneficiary targeting/boundary issues; monitoring and reporting; governance structures; project type; project selection processes; understanding of equity; the trade-offs between equity and effectiveness; and the pathways to conservation impact. The research used quantitative and qualitative methods, sampling 520 respondents in 27 park-adjacent parishes and 30 key informants from government and non-government agencies. Focus group discussions and a stakeholder workshop provided additional valuable insights. A theory of change has been developed which proposes six different pathways by which a revenue-sharing scheme,Item Strengthening Conservation of Owl- Faced Monkeys (Cercopithecus Hamlyni) in the Albertine Rift Region (ARR)(Science PG Publishing group, 2018-10-15) Wycliffe, Tumwesigye; Louis, Rugerinyange; Claude, Hakizimana; Doreen, Atwongyeire; Goretty, Nagawa; Daniel, NdizihiweThe owl-faced monkeys (Cercopithecus hamlyni) are endemic to the Albertine Rift Region (ARR). They live in and feed on bamboo plantations as their primary habitat. Illegal bamboo harvesting threaten the owl-faced monkeys and associated biodiversity across the Nyungwe-Kibira trans-boundary ecosystem in the ARR. Spatial distribution of bamboo plantations, mechanisms for propagation and management in Rwanda and Burundi are poorly documented. The study aimed at mapping potential Cecopithecus hamlyni habitats, establishment of threats facing bamboo plantations, and training local communities in bamboo propagation and management techniques. The study used GIS data from IUCN red list and diva-gis websites, 300 household interviews and focus group discussions of key informants from Rwanda and Burundi. GIS 10, SPSS version 18 and Microsoft Excel were used for data analysis. Results indicate that potential habitats for C. hamlyni include: Western DR Congo, South Eastern Rwanda and North Western Burundi. Results show that 67% of the households harvest bamboo trees for handcrafts and construction while 50% harvest bamboo trees for sale due to high poverty levels in their households. The study concluded that collaborative trans-boundary management of protected areas, capacity building for local communities, formation of cooperatives and enacting appropriate laws promotes biodiversity conservation in the region. Strengthening law enforcement and propagation of bamboo plantations on marginal land were recommended.Item Training and Employee performance in health sector of Buhweju District Local Government(Bishop Stuart University, 2019) Twesiime, Addams; Roberts, Kabeba MuriisaABSTRACT The study concentrated on the influence of training on employee performance in the health sector in Buhweju district local government. It was guided by the following objectives; to establish health workers perceptions towards training programs, to find out the nature and organization of health workers training, to assess the health workers performance and to establish the strategies that can be adopted to improve health workers performance in Buhweju district local government respectively. The study used a descriptive cross-sectional survey research design consisting of both qualitative and quantitative research approaches. The study population consisted of Chief Administrative Officer (CAO), human resource officers, district secretary for social services, chairperson LCV, Chairperson LC IIIs, sub county chiefs, NGOs Leaders, health inspectors, RDC, DHO, health workers at health Centre IV and health Centre IIIs. A sample size of 108 respondents was used. Questionnaires, interviews and a documentary review checklist were used during data collection. The researcher used Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS) during data analysis. The findings of the study revealed that, most of the employees were aware of the existence of the training programme while few of them never noticed its existence. On the other way, to some extent the identification of training needs was administered, but also it has been evidenced that the selection of employees in some cases didn‟t prove to have elements of fairness and transparency as there were a lot of complaints from employees insisting that the selection of employees for training was dominated with unfair acts including elements of corruption and favoritism. The study revealed that both on job and off job training programs existed in the area. The management therefore has to play a key role by making sure that there is an identification of training needs which will enable an organization to implement training programme well since it will be able to identify the existing gaps which holds back the organization from achieving its objectives. The management should make sure that there is cost sharing between the trainees and the organization at large. This will enable the organization not to incur a lot of costs in training of its employee but also the employees could have a backup from their employers to attain an effective training programme. The findings recommended that all health workers need to be trained especially the ones with little experience in executing the health service delivery need to be given a priority. The study used simple random and stratified sampling methods, while the questionnaire and interview guide were used to collect the data from different respondents, correlation matrix was run in order to establish the relationship between the variablesItem The Effects of Credit Terms on Loan Performance of SACCOS in Mbarara City(Bishop Stuart University, 2021) Wilberforce, Bamwite; Robert, Mugabe; Atwiine, Daniel Wanito; Bishop Stuart UniversityThe study was carried out on the effects of credit terms on loan performance of savings and credit cooperatives (SACCOs) in Uganda: A case study of selected SACCOs in Mbarara City. The study adopted both a Case study and cross-sectional research designs with a population size of 429 consisting of directors, managers and employees. The total sample size was 207. The study used simple random to select both employees and board members while purposive sampling used to select managers. Questionnaires were administered to 189 both employees and board members while 18 SACCO managers were interviewed. Data was analysed both quantitatively using SPSS 20 and qualitative approach thematically. The study found out that Credit management (credit terms, client appraisal have a high significant effect on loan performance of SACCOs in Mbarara City. However, credit risk control as credit management practice has a low significant effect on loan performance. The study recommends that SACCOs in Mbarara City should employ credit management practices like loan insurance, monitoring system of clients in their SACCOs, clear policy of joint liability between clients and SACCOs, independent risk screening teams to assess clients, and restructuring some loans for struggling clients before selling off their collaterals in order to reduce on the rate of non-performing loans thus increasing their loan performance. Agume; Nagaaba, NicksonABSTRACT : The study determined the effect of credit risk monitoring on financial performance SACCOs in Ibanda municipality. The study anchored of an objective; to determine the effect of credit risk monitoring on the financial performance of SACCOs in Ibanda municipality. The researcher used a cross sectional descriptive survey design with quantitative approaches of data collection and analysis. The study population comprised of employees of SACCOs in Ibanda municipality. In this study credit supervisors and loans officers were the key respondents. A sample of 88 respondents was used determined with the help of Yamane (1967) formula. Data was majorly collected using a questionnaire as a tool for quantitative data collection and analysis was done used a data management tool SPSS (Version 23) where descriptive and correlational statistics were derived to find out the relationship between the two variables under the study. The study results indicated a moderate significant positive relationship between credit risk monitoring and financial performance of SACCOs (r = 0.473**, p<.01). The study recommended that there is a need for SACCOs to put in place credit risk strategy which can be followed to ensure that finances are not lost in courtesy of credit risk monitoringItem The influence of gender diversity and company financial performance in East Africa(African Journal of Business Management, 2021-05-31) Johnson, Atwiine; David, Namanya; Juliet, Wakaisuka- IsingomaThe main aim of this study was to examine the influence of gender diversity on financial performance of EAC’s listed companies and to compare influence of gender diversity on company’s financial performance before and after the operationalisation of the East African Community (EAC) Common Market in 2010. The authors adopted a positivist paradigm in a quantitative analysis using non probability sampling to select forty-two EAC listed companies. They developed hypothesises basing on secondary data from data stream database and annual reports. SPSS was used to generate correlation, and regression results. The findings indicated that gender diversity of the board has no statistically significant influence on company financial performance measured by Return on Assets (ROA), Return on Equity (ROE), Tobin Q ratio (TBQ) and Price Earnings Ratio (PER). Secondly, the authors discovered no changes in gender diversity for most listed companies for the period before and after operationalisation of the EAC - Common Market.Item Pan African Feminist Perspectives Promoting Matriarchy. Discussed in the study are the names, words and proverbs that describe a general perspective of women and illustrate how women were powerful be fore colonialism. The paper also presents how women were later oppressed and lost power during the colonial period. Finally, the paper puts forwards ways of reclaiming women’s power in the Ankole Sub-region.Item Women‘s employment and the changing family pattern in Ankole Sub-region- Uganda(International Journal of Research and Innovation in Social Science, 2021-12) Asiimire, Donath; Gertrude, Fester; Medard, Twinamatsiko; Benard, NuwatuhaireThis study employed a case study design using phenomenological stances of qualitative research to collect data from three districts of Mbarara, Bushenyi and Kiruhura and the objective of the study was to find out how women’s entrance in formal employment has contributed to changes in marriage and gender roles. Drawing from 17 interviews (with women activists, community development officers, probation officers, grade II magistrates, Gender based organisation managers, political leaders, religious leaders, local leaders) and 5 FGDs (with household heads, women in formal and informal employment), findings revealed that, women’s employment leads to a shift in marriage. The findings further reveal that women’s employment increases women’s conflicting roles (the tripartite roles). The study concluded that, women’s employment is significantly related to marriage and gender roles, increasing numbers of women in formal and informal employment has led to delays in marriage, child birth and increases in conflicting roles for women. Thus the study recommended that gender-responsive social protection systems should be adopted by all places of work, encourage and support institutions and all places of work to put provisions for day care centres and increase on maternity leave days.
