The research was done as a baseline study for investigating the possibility of implementing a project for conservation of river Rwizi as a way to restore its natural stability since it is highly depreciating due to degradation henc is the major source of water in the Mbarara dry corridor of nomadic pastoralists and other cattle keepers. In order to establish the extent of river degradation; a survey on the effects of community activities and peoples’ beliefs towards river depreciation was done. The study investigated on perceptions of the community towards river Rwizi degradation in a way to establish the possibility of involving the people into river conservation; in order to reactivate the river from drying, silt and other degradation indicators. This emerging crisis of the river drying up has affected natural; social and economic activities negatively especially in the areas of the river catchment; hence the need for river conservation to save nature in river catchment; and in other water sources in which Rwizi drains; that connect into world waters such as river Nile and lake Victoria. People appreciate the river since it is a source of water for irrigation and domestic use. The river as well l to rainfall formation; through evaporation, in addition to provision of water for animals. The anthropological factors have led to continuous reduction in volume and speed of Rwizi profile. The natural vegetation at river banks is getting continuously replaced by agricultural plants and bare lands. The growing of crops next to river banks involve tilling of land and softening soil; making it bare and prone to erosion; parts of agricultural land get deposited into the stream leading to widening of river channel and siltation of the continuous drying. The major land use activities that have degraded and deteriorated river Rwizi include cultivation, industrialisation and settlements, cattle rearing, sand mini There is great need for adjusting policy procedures for conservation of the river towards integrating well the current conservation needs and population demandsItem Dynamics of Urban and Rural Linkages in Uganda(Centre for Democracy, Research and Development (CEDRED),, 2018-09) Gershom, AtukundaRapid urbanization brings opportunities for harmonizing policy issues for sustainable rural development with those for sustainable urbanization. But urbanization also comes with serious loss of arable land, degradation of ecosystems as well as social and environmental changes to the urban populations. The current urbanization process in developing countries is indicative of a process that needs considerable attention not only as a basis for transformation of societies in the developing countries but also for sustainable development. As cities grow and expand it is expected that economic growth and development will progress and act as a drive for social transformation and improvement of not only in urban areas but the greater rural hinterland served by the urbanized region. Experiences in developing countries like Uganda show a disjuncture between urbanization and the envisaged socio-economic transformation. Increased and persistent urban poverty, environmental sanitation issues, urban food issues, housing, transportation and pollution problems are prevalent in cities of developing countries with the most vulnerable being areas of recent urban expansion and settlements of the urban poor who are the most vulnerable. This article analyzes how the changing nature of population mobility flows into and within two frontiers; rural-urban and urban-rural and how they have shaped sustainable rural development in Uganda. This article highlights the many features and characteristics of urban expansion in developing countries focusing on the local processes underlying urbanization in districts of Uganda. The article also explores features such as driving forces of urbanization in Uganda, effects of urbanization and rural linkages, challenges and opportunities for sustainable rural development in Uganda and the conclusion which summarises the main contrasting features of urban expansion in Uganda.Item The Effect of Forest Management Initiatives on Sustainability of Forests(International Journal of Science and Research (IJSR), 2018-02) Niyongere, Pierre Celestin; Gershom, Atukunda; Roberts, Muriisa KThe study was about the effect of forest management initiatives on sustainability of forests in Isingiro District, Southwestern Uganda. The study adopted a cross-sectional descriptive design and targeted district forestry and environment officials, local residents, local leaders (LC II-III) and environment committee representatives at local councils II & III in Isingiro district. Purposive and simple random sampling techniques were used to select respondents. Questionnaire and interviews were used as a data collection method. Data analysis used descriptive statistics in form of frequency and percentages while data from primary source particularly interview guide was compared, validated and confirmed with data from secondary sources. Findings from the field established that forest management has promoted sustainability of forests in the district through gazetting forest premises, existing forests being carefully monitored and proper land management being maintained. Sustainability of forests was being hindered by Limited resources for implementing forest management policies and negative perceptions towards forest management. Promoting sustainability of forests in Uganda is an enormous work that requires concerted efforts from all the different stakeholders. There is need to increase funding in the forestry department to enable the planners make plans and enforce them at up to the community level.Item The effect of Population Growth on Food Security situation among Refugees in Nakivale refugee settlement, Isingiro District(Bishop Stuart University, 2019) Zamzam, Ally; Firimooni, R Banugire; Gershom, AtukundaThe study was about the effect of population growth on food security situation among the Refugees in Nakivale Refugee Settlement, Isingiro District. The study objectives were; to determine the main population changes taking placein Nakivale Refugee Settlement, and also to establish the effects of age composition on food availability among the Refugees. The researcher used a cross sectional research design. The study used a sample size of 133 respondents. Qualitative data was analyzed using content analysis while quantitative data was analyzed using SPSS. Basing on the field findings, there was a significant relationship between Population Growth and Food Security situation among the Refugees of Nakivale Refugee Settlement. This was due to the fact that when the population fertility and refugee influx is high, food becomes insufficient to the refugees and when the mortality is highly, the population reduces as most of the people become sick and weak and food is highly consumed by the weak people. Based on the age composition, it was evident that working age bracket increases food security the fact that most households involved in work and their consumption rate is reserved compared to the younger population who are dependants as well as existing mothers who produce more young kids. The researcher recommends that the government and NGOs institute more technical personnel in the camp to help refugees by training them on better farming skills, helping them to create employment. It is also recommended that the refugees need to be trained with income generating activities both entrepreneurial and life skills. Further recommendation to the government and NGOs is that there should be addition of various food types that refugees prefer to eat, also, differentseedlings should be given to refugees for them to grow more crops and improve on yielding. NGOs should intervene towards empowering mothers specifically those who have children below 12 years.Item Motivation and Retention of Workers in Faith-based Organisations(East African Journal of Traditions, Culture and Religion, 2022) Gershom, Atukunda; Johnson, Atwine; Kusasira, Serinah TinkaThe study was about motivation and retention of workers in faith-based organisations: a case study of child development centre projects of Ankole Diocese. It was guided by the following objectives; to establish the influence of promotion on employee retention in faith-based organizations of Ankole Diocese Child Development Centre Projects, to examine the influence of Salary increment on employee retention in faith-based organizations of Ankole Diocese Child Development Centre Projects in reducing employee turnover and to establish the effect of recognition on employee retention in faith-based organizations in Ankole Diocese Child Development Centre Projects. A cross-section design was adopted for this study to determine the frequency of occurrences of the phenomenon and discover whether or not if there is a relationship that exists between the variables. The target population of this study comprised Child development officers, Project directors, Project overseers, Partnership facilitators, LDP graduates, and Centre guides of Ankole Diocese. The study employed questionnaire and interviewing. The study findings revealed that there is a positive strong relationship between promotions on employee retention; there is a positive strong relationship between salary increment influences employee retention; a positive relationship between recognition and employee retention in faith-based organisations. Therefore; the study recommended that employee promotion does play a very significant role in retaining employees at work places; the human resource management department should carry out its career management policy and make relevant changes so as to take into considerations the many factors that individuals may require at the Ankole Diocese Child Development Centre Project. Finally; there should be good management in faith-based organizations with the human resource department so as to ensure that the working conditions specifically in line with working hours, cleanliness of environment and work instruments are put in placeItem Organizational Rewards and Performance of Health Centre IV workers in Greater Mbarara District, Uganda(2013) Johnson, Atwiine; Gershom, Atukunda; Wycliffe, Tumwesigye; Justus, AsasiraPurpose: The purpose of this paper is to study relationship between organizational rewards, and performance of Health Centre IV workers in greater Mbarara District. Methods: This study used cross-sectional, explanatory and correlational approaches, and it utilised health center IV’s workers’ data that were collected by using a questionnaire survey from a sample of 200 health workers from 11 health centres from greater Mbarara district. Findings: Results revealed that rewards, were significantly associated with health workers’ performances. Contrary to previous thinking, organizational rewards and constructs do not significantly predict health workers’ performance. Once health centre IV’s have appropriate reward strategies for their health workers in health facilities, they are likely to work hard by meeting deadlines, being available at their work station and they would eventually enhance on job performance. Research limitations/implications: This study focuses on rewards, and performance of health workers’ in health centres iv in greater Mbarara and it is possible that these results are only applicable to the public health centres iv in greater Mbarara. More research is therefore needed to further understand the relationship between rewards, and performance of health workers in other sectors such as the private health sector and in other areas of the country like northern, central and eastern Uganda. Practical implications: The results are important for health policy development and implementation, for example, in terms of primary health care and reporting lines for the health workers so as to enhance on their performance in public health sector. Originality/value: As far as the authors are aware, no research has hitherto been undertaken that investigates the relationship between reward practices on health workers’ performance in health centres IV in greater Mbarara district. A case study design was used in this study. A mixed design method was used where qualitative and quantitativedata was collected by use of questionnaire and interview. The population composed rural community members technical staff and local leaders involved in feeder road networks and community economic development of ruralcommunities which was represented by a sample size of 60 people. For quantitative data, SPSS version 20 was utilised to output descriptive statistics presented in form of mean andstandard deviation. Person correlation was also run to find out the magnitude of the relationship between feeder road network and agricultural production in Kiruhura district. Qualitative data from the interview was analysedby the use of thematic content analysis and was presented alongside the quantitative findings. From the present study, the findings revealed that there is a positive and strong relationship between feeder roadnetwork and agricultural production in Kiruhura district (r=0.742, P <0.01). the study recommends that feederroads should be given a priority at both District and sub county levels in the budgeting process and the feeder roadnetwork committee needs to be consulted at the time of budgeting for proper implementation towards the good ofthe road network in order to realise better Agricultural out comes for the development of the economyItem The Relationship between Workload and Teachers Effectiveness in Secondary Schools(Bishop Stuart University, 2019) Wilber, Nuwaha; Gershom, Atukunda; Florah, KyayemagyeThe study assessed the relationship between teachers’ workload and their effectiveness in secondary schools. A descriptive survey design was adopted for this study to determine the frequency of occurrences of the phenomenon and discover whether or not if there is a relationship that exists between the variables. The target population of this study comprised Head teachers, Deputy Head teachers, Directors of Studies and Teachers in the selected Secondary Schools in Sheema Municipality, Sheema Municipality. The study employed questionnaire, and interviewing. The study used Pearson correlation to determine the level of statistical relationship between workload and teachers’ effectiveness. Results indicate that there is a weak but significant positive correlation between teachers’ workload and their effectiveness in secondary schools (r=0.012, p<0.045). It was found that teachers are always prepared when holding classes. It was concluded that teachers in secondary schools of Sheema Municipality, Sheema Municipality are given other responsibilities apart from teaching. These include; duty supervision, monitoring, some co-curricular activities like drama, football guidance and counseling. It was also concluded that teachers in secondary schools of Sheema Municipality, Sheema Municipality are effective in terms of students’ improvement in discipline, good performance registered in terms of academics. It was also concluded that more workload for teachers affects their effectiveness negatively that is; failure to prepare schemes of work, lesson plans, assess learners, maintain discipline and participate in co-curricular activities. The study employed a descriptive survey research design. The target population was 126 science teachers and head teachers in seven government-aided secondary schools in Mbarara District. The study randomly sampled 96 science teachers and seven Head Masters using Yamens’ formula. A questionnaire and an interview schedule were used as source of data from the field. The study established that parent teachers association (PTA) and Secondary Science and Mathematics training allowances were the most common allowances in schools under investigation. Extra teaching allowances, salary increment, duty allowance and overtime allowances were moderately perceived to exist. Remuneration motivated teachers in carrying out such school activities as to complete syllabus, to promote good performance and quality of teaching and to attend classes regularly. Objectives of the study were; to identify sustainable waste management practices contributing to urban development, to establish the existing gaps between sustainable waste management practices and urban development and to explore measures to fill the existing gaps between sustainable waste management practices and urban development. A case study research design was used where both quantitative and qualitative methods of data collection and analysis were used. Case study enabled the researcher to study a single discrete social unit in depth. The study was based on a case study research design where different subjects were studied one point at a time. In this study, both the quantitative and qualitative approaches were used. The study population comprised employees from Kamukuzi division Mbarara municipality and community members with a total population of 6,459, a sample size consisted of 148 respondents where 50 respondents were used. Data analysis used two techniques namely qualitative and quantitative data analysis. It was found out that Solid waste management practices Communicate about coordination of primary and secondary collection systems, Separate waste inorganic materials, construction of drainage channels, Issuing of policies to communicate on proper waste management practices. Existing gaps between sustainable waste management and urban development included lack of attention at the planning and design stage, Insufficient incentives to implement waste reduction measures, poor sensitization of community members, poor strategic urban planning, corruption among officials, weak leadership, lack of strong government interaction, embezzlement of funds, Limited human resources and facilities. The study recommended that Outsourcing waste management services to private entities should demonstrate the importance of including social and livelihood aspects when considering full-scale privatization of waste management servicesItem Utilization of health insurance by patients with diabetes or hypertension in urban hospitals in Mbarara, Uganda(Bishop Stuart University, 2022-04-28) Peter, Kangwagye; Laban, Waswa Bright; Gershom, Atukunda; Robert, Basaza; Francis, BajunirweDiabetes and hypertension are among the leading contributors to global mortality and require life-long medical care. However, many patients cannot access quality healthcare due to high out-of-pocket expenditures, thus health insurance would help provide relief. This paper examines factors associated with utilization of health insurance by patients with diabetes or hypertension at two urban hospitals in Mbarara, southwestern Uganda. Methods: We used a cross-sectional survey design to collect data from patients with diabetes or hypertension attending two hospitals located in Mbarara. Logistic regression models were used to examine associations between demographic factors, socio-economic factors and awareness of scheme existence and health insurance utilization. Results: We enrolled 370 participants, 235 (63.5%) females and 135 (36.5%) males, with diabetes or hypertension. Patients who were not members of a microfinance scheme were 76% less likely to enrol in a health insurance scheme (OR = 0.34, 95% CI: 0.15 – 0.78, p = 0.011). Patients diagnosed with diabetes/hypertension 5 – 9 years ago were more likely to enrol in a health insurance scheme (OR = 2.99, 95% CI: 1.14 – 7.87, p = 0.026) compared to those diagnosed 0 – 4 years ago. Patients who were not aware of the existing schemes in their areas were 99% less likely to take up health insurance (OR = 0.01, 95% CI: 0.0 – 0.02, p < 0.001) compared to those who knew about health insurance schemes operating in the study area. Majority of respondents expressed willingness to join the proposed national health insurance scheme although concerns were raised about high premiums and misuse of funds which may negatively impact decisions to enrol.
